How to change Apollo Soldering iron tip

1) Make sure to turn the power off and cool down the iron cartridge to room temperature and pull down on the iron cartridge to remove and replace with a new one. If it does not come out, using the silicone tube pull it down strongly. In case flux is jammed, remove it carefully with an alcohol. You can also increase the temperature to approx. 450 Degrees C to "break" the flux barrier. Power off & remove with a silicone tube. The tip will be very hot.

2) Make sure that the power to the iron unit is off. To insert a new tip, push gently UP until the tip stops. Then turn it until you feel the "Keyway" locate into position. When you feel the keyway locate, push up firmly. Note: Do not turn the iron cartridge while the key is not in the position or the key is damaged.

Generally, the materials of soldering tip are iron, nickel, chromium, tin. The key determinant of the quality is iron plating. While under high temperature, the iron and tin will generate a new alloy, this alloy can be melted in liquid solder, and then lead to iron plating lose; in the end, the soldering tip be perforated. The lead can resist the run off speed of iron plating. Moreover, the higher tin content of the lead-free solder, the corrosive degree will be more serious;  the higher temperature, the faster corrosive speed. Relying on years of research, we discovered that when the soldering tip is plated with the special electroplate formula, the corrosive speed can be slowed down efficiently. Coping with lead-free soldering, these tips have longer life and better thermal performance.

tin the tipSoldering tips are usually made by red copper. To avoid oxidization during high temperature soldering works, the tips need to be plated; some kinds of soldering tips are made by metal alloy materials that are not easy to be oxidized. Before using a brand new tip, it is very helpful to pretin it. The method is to clean the tip with soft sand paper, then dip it in rosin water, wetting it with solder and then polish it repeatly on a board to ensure every side is tinned well. If it's been using for a very long time and it's already oxidized, in this case, use a grater to clean the surface oxidation layer gently, then tin the tip as the method we mentioned above. PS: There are many tutorials about tin the soldering tip, Google it, you will find much detailed guide. The longer distance between heating element and the tip, the lower temperature, vice versa. We can also replace a soldering tip with different size & shape to adjust the temperature. The thinner tip, the higher temperature, vice versa. According to different soldering environment, it's essential to adopt different size and different shape tips. Regarding the shape, there're all round shape, screwdriver shape, chisel, conical shape, spade, U-shaped, square shape, etc. How to select the soldering tip? 1. Select according to the iron. The replacement tips of different soldering iron are very different. For instance, the HAKKO FX-951 soldering station uses with T12 series tips, while the Weller WSD81 uses with LT series tips. I think everybody knows this. 2. Select shape. Let's take HAKKO 900M series tips as the example. For shape B, it's all round type, every side is wettable; shape I, it's thin, stores little heat so it's suitable to solder heat sensitive components; shape K is ideal for slide soldering. 3. Select size. Tip size depends on your application. When soldering small components, you need to choose the narrow and thin tip because it's small and stores little heat; if need to joint large area, the thicker soldering tip will be more efficient.   1. When soldering, choose as low temperature as possible
  2. Clean the tip with wet sponge or tip cleaner after soldering
  3. Feed the tin on the solder joint in stead of the tip
  4. Do not force the soldering iron, the solder cannot be melted faster
  5. Do not use highly active flux
  6. Turn off the soldering iron when don't use.

Origin of lead-free soldering

Due to the requirement of environmental protection, especially ISO14000 launched, many countries began to legislate to forbid leaded material in solder. EU: RoHS law: apply from 2006.07.01, restrict the material of electronic products. USA: TRI law: restrict to use lead As time goes by, I think more relevant laws will be launched. Under such situation, lead-free solder was produced, the main contents of lead-free solder are Sn, Ag & Cu.

The Problems

Soldering tip * When the soldering tip is oxidized, use the tip cleaner before use, otherwise the heating ability will be influenced. Soldering Tip Cleaner In order to get the best out of the soldering tips, do remember to notice the following points:

  1. Use a sand paper to wipe the greasy dirt or rust on the tip before using solder flux.
  2. When using a brand new soldering tip, due to the blue resin on the tip top will drop as the temperature rises, please use enough solder to activate the tin surface; do this step even the tip doesn't have blue resin.
  3. When the tip has oxidizing material such as solder flux, use the wet & clean solder sponge to clean it. If the solder sponge is dirty or dry, or clean overly, may lead to the soldering tip not wetting.
  4. If the soldering tip is not wettable, wipe the tin completely and recover to normal temperature, then use the sand paper to clean the oxidizing material lightly. Then, tin the tip when the temperature rises.
  5. The iron plating can improve the durability, so DO NOT rasp away the iron plating.
  6. To make sure the tin surface in good condition, when the soldering work is paused or finished, tin the tip and keep it well.
